What is YouthServe AmeriCorps?

YouthServe AmeriCorps is a school - based community project serving Humboldt County in Northern California. Members work with middle and high school aged students who are enrolled in Alternative Education Schools (Community, Court or Continuation Schools). Students are typically enrolled in these Alternative Education schools because they have fallen behind in their academic credits, have extensive absences, behavioral issues, and / or have non-traditional ways of learning. YouthServe AmeriCorps members academically mentor students through the combined use of a standards-based / character-based curriculum and the service-learning method to assist students in achieving their high school diplomas, learning life and job skills, while improving their community.

What Makes YouthServe AmeriCorps Unique?

Members provide students with academic support, supplemental classes, fieldtrips, and volunteer opportunities. Members also support and encourage students to reflect on their character, skills, and behaviors in order to make positive life choices that will assist them in making the transition into adulthood.

YouthServe is steadfast in its commitment to offer a spectrum of workshops throughout the program year to support members in their personal and professional growth and development. These trainings are provided through weekly team meetings where members have the opportunity in both large and small groups to share challenges and exchange ideas for best practices. Through these trainings, reflection activities, and large-scale service day event planning, a strong sense of community among the program’s AmeriCorps members is developed.
